Film Screening, Fellow Writers, Cocktails = A Great Event

One of my favorite things about being a writer, is getting the opportunity to take part in events for other writers and creatives alike. On Sunday I attended an exclusive screening of independent film director, Christine Fugate's critically acclaimed film, "Grief Becomes Me: A Love Story," which was hosted by one of my good friends and author, Jane Porter.

The screening was held at "The Big Picture" theatre and lounge, which was an experience in itself. The rich purple walls of the lounge enveloped overstuffed chairs and intimate booths splashed in leopard print and bold jewel toned hues.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, as we sipped cocktails and mingled before adjourning into the theatre for the screening. (Yes, these photos are "of" the venue, not during the party. LOL! Trust me, it was a full house, but I didn't have time during the event to snap pics of my own.)

Once settled in the theatre, all 150 of the attendees watched a very poignant and resonating film, "Grief Becomes Me," about one woman's traumatic experience in loss and how she embraced her emotions and grew from the experience, using her poetry as a vehicle to move through her grief with grace and insight.

Christine captured this journey beautifully, and it was wonderful to hear her speak afterward about how the project came about and the process itself. It reminded me that all of us "creatives" share similar goals and obstacles during our quests to see our dreams fulfilled. I only hope that when my books are published some day, they resonate just as powerfully with readers as Christine's film did with the viewers. Whether it's a tear, a laugh, or something that provokes a thought, we all seek to create an experience with which our audience will resonate; something that will remain with them long afterward — much like this film did with me. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of experiencing Christine's work, please visit her website to learn more about her, and consider picking up her dvd.

Thanks, Christina, for sharing your experience with us. I wish, after reading your piece here, that I was able to have gone to the screening myself. I believe I've heard about this story before but wasn't aware that it was being made into a film. I'll scoot on over to the other website and check out that DVD. Thanks! :)
